CIAM researchers presented 12 reports at ICAS 2018 and received an award for AGILE project
A delegation of the Central Institute of the Aviation Motors (CIAM, a subsidiary of the National Research Center ‘Zhukovsky Institute’) took part in the 31st Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences — ICAS 2018, which was held this year in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

ICAS is a big non-government organization facilitating collaboration between aeronautical engineering professional societies and institutes in 30 countries. CIAM has been its associated member since 2005.

An important part of the scientific program of the Congress was a direction dedicated to the implementation of the AGILE international project of the 8th European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020). The project is focused on development of MDO framework for efficient aircraft design in distributed environment. Russia is represented in the project by CIAM and TsAGI.

The AGILE project participants made 17 reports at various sessions, including the “MDO AGILE” track chaired by Artur Mirzoyan, member of the International Program Committee of ICAS and Head of Sector of CIAM. He presented two papers highlighting the results of studies on propulsion and on-board systems matching in the distributed collaborative MDO environment applying for advanced regional and medium haul jet and on multiobjective multiparametric optimization of propulsion system for advanced civil aircraft in distributed environment of collaborative MDO system developed in the AGILE project.

The AGILE research team was awarded an ICAS award and the gold medal in recognition of aeronautic innovations and accomplishments in advancing the next generation of collaborative Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization processes in international collaborations. It was an important event of the Congress.

The CIAM delegates delivered reports on key issues of propulsion and power plant development at specialized sessions of ICAS 2018. Among the topics there are: characteristics of systems with electrically driven units - experimental studies in a gas turbine engine demonstrator (O.S. Gurevich, A.I. Gulienko, M.V. Gordin), research of propulsion engines for advance reusable TSTO aerospace system (A.I. Lanshin, O.V. Sokolova, Yu.M. Shikhman, V.E. Shlyakotin), certain aspects of fan model stage designing for advanced turbofans (S.V. Pankov and others), dynamic model for planetary gear sets of geared turbofan jet engines (D. Kalinin, J. Temis), numerical and experimental study of the effect of circumferential grooves on HPC last stage performance (V.I. Mileshin and others) etc.

For the first time, a historical session was held in which Vladimir Palkin, Advisor to the Director General of CIAM, told about the studies of turboramjets.

The speeches of the CIAM researchers provoked lively discussions among the Congress participants.

ICAS pays special attention to young professionals and scientists. This time, the ICAS “Careers for Young Professionals in Aviation” Program Committee, which included the CIAM specialist Alexei Nepomnyashchy, organized a “Speed  Mentoring” session for students and young professionals. Authoritative scientists from leading companies, research institutes and organizations in aeronautics all over the world, including representatives of the Institute, spoke with them at the “active” round tables.

The next ICAS congress will be held in September 2020 in Shanghai, China.
