Hydroaviasalon-2018: TsAGI presented advanced scientific projects
Within the framework of the business program for Hydroaviasalon-2018, the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute presented four advanced development projects qualified for government support.

The research “Multi-Discipline Development Procedures for Efficient Metal-Composite Airframe Based on Principles of Biomechanics, Adaptronics, and Monitoring” is related to the development of a digital complex for multi-discipline design and virtual simulation of aircraft load-carrying structures. The software complex will provide for a synthesis of new structural designs of appropriate topology and shape. It will offer an opportunity to run virtual simulation of static and dynamic aircraft tests and to simulate behaviour of adaptive wing high-lift devices. Also, it is planned to address issues of monitoring of resource consumption and damage to airframes. Proposed approaches will reduce the weight of load-carrying structures and production costs of prototyping and tests.

The project “Integrated Management System for Design and Manufacture of Aerodynamic Models” is to be implemented in field model manufacturing. With this implementation, manufacturing terms for aerodynamic models and single articles of aviation equipment being developed will be reduced by half of the present level.

The project “Development of New Flow Control Methods for Design of Next Generation Civil Aircraft” covers new technologies for design of aircraft aerodynamic configurations with the use of natural and artificial laminarization. The project is planned to end with flight tests of perforated fin panels of a long-range aircraft at the flying test-bed of the Gromov Flight Research Institute. Preliminary calculations show that use of flow control technologies will lead to an increase in civil aircraft fuel efficiency.

Unmanned aircraft being developed within the framework of the project “Development and Design of Transport Unmanned Aircraft Demonstrator for Vertical Takeoff and Landing with Lift Fans” will improve transport availability in areas which have an undeveloped airport network. Its main advantages include considerably smaller dimensions and low noise level as compared to aircraft of other aerodynamic configurations (helicopters, airplanes) with similar or larger payload, speed, and flight range. Such unmanned aircraft may be operated in adverse weather conditions, restrained urban conditions, rugged mountainous and forested areas, as well as in close proximity to maintenance personnel. The plan is to create an unmanned aircraft demonstrator with a take-off weight of 90 kg which will be operable in all flight modes and will prove feasibility to achieve all the characteristics claimed.

The Deputy General Director for Research Activities of FSUE TsAGI, Aleksandr Medvedsky stated: “The presented projects are remarkably diverse and indicate a variety of scientific areas studied in TsAGI. Each project ends with a demonstrator of technologies with a high level of readiness of the technology. It should be noted that development activities are supported by road maps indicating work stage schedules and executing organizations. All projects were highly appraised by the experts and will further be directed to the Expert Board of the Russian Federation State Program ‘Aviation Industry Development, 2013—2025’ .”
