TsAGI holds “Aircraft structural strength” Conference
A science and technology conference, “Aircraft structural strength” was held at the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI), May 31 — June 1. The Institute welcomed more than 100 representatives of leading design offices, industrial enterprises, research institutes and Universities. Scientists submitted about 70 plenary and section reports and more than 50 poster presentations on topical issues of improving standards in civil and military aircraft industries; testing; design integrity of composites, high-speed vehicles, drones, etc. TsAGI specialists touched upon drones’ strength composites features, optimization of the power structures of aircraft, endurance test issues, aeroelasticity, methods for structural state monitoring, buffeting and flutter simulation, and much more. Participants discussed key problems and directions for future research.

Michael Zichenkov, TsAGI Deputy Director General opened the Conference, speaking at the plenary meeting. In his report, “TsAGI integrated studies of aircraft structural strength” he spoke about the establishment of aircraft structural strength research in TsAGI, and introduced the investigation, carried out by specialists of the Institute. The report of PJSC “Irkut” about structural strength of the prospective Russian airliner MC-21 evoked a keen interest as well.

“This year’s Conference is particularly valuable for us as it is timed to celebrate TsAGI’s centenary, but its goal remains the same,” said Michail Zichenkov. “We strive to give scientists an opportunity to reconcile science with practice, to set priorities, to develop together ways of solving problems and find new ways of team-work. I am pleased to note the high scientific level and competence of the submitted works.”

The “Aircraft structural strength” research Conference was initiated by TsAGI to discuss topical issues in applied strength. The event was held regularly up to the 1990’s, followed by a pause until 2012. Today TsAGI organizes the Conference every two years. This time, the reports were presented by experts of PJSC “Irkut”, Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, JSC “Aerocomposite”, GosNII GA, Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics RAS, Sibnia, “VIAM”, OJSC Kazan helicopter plant, “Technopark” Phystech, MIPT, Moscow State University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, South Ural State University, etc.
