FSUE TsAGI at the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students
In the middle of October, a delegation of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky (a member of the National Research Center “Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky”) took part in the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS 2017) in Sochi, Russia.

Sergey Chernyshev, the General Director of TSAGI and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was invited to be the speaker at the educational session “Aviation of the Future,” aimed at providing insight into the global trends, promising areas, advanced and projects of concern in aircraft engineering. The topics of the discussion included hybrid power plants, aviation metamaterials, hypersonic aircraft, digital technologies and many others. Key individuals of the national aviation industry took part in the discussion, including top executives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the United Aircraft Corporation, the United Engine Corporation, Helicopters of Russia JSC, etc.

Sergey Chernyshev gave a lecture on “New Concepts of Aircraft: the Future Begins Today.” The audience included young professionals, members of industry enterprises, and students of relevant departments. The head of the Russian Center of Aeronautical Science told the audience about the external appearance of new aircraft, including the “flying wing” aircraft, upper-engine aircraft, open-rotor aircraft configuration, etc. Sergey Chernyshev gave a detailed description of the performance and advantages of these concepts. In addition, the General Director of TsAGI noted the challenges facing the aviation community — reduction of aircraft noise level, reduction of harmful emissions, safety improvement, etc.

“The festival was an effective venue for discussing current aviation trends among the young people — representatives of the new generation of engineers, researchers, people with a modern way of thinking, which are open to new ambitious projects and unconventional solutions,” said Dr. Chernyshev. “I am pleased to have an opportunity to tell them about what the ‘tomorrow’ of the aviation industry can look like, and consider the challenges facing us. I am confident that the discussion of the future of the aviation industry at such a major festival will help popularize the industry among young people.”

The XIX World Festival of Youth and Students aims to consolidate the global youth community, and to reinforce and develop international cooperation. One of the main goals of the event is to form the image of the future collectively by young people from different countries of the world, in the priority areas of development of the world economy and culture. WFYS 2017 gathered 20,000 young professionals in various fields aged 18 to 35 from over 180 countries.
